Korg Announces Volca Sample, the latest addition to the wildly popular Volca line.

Just when you thought it was safe to settle in with any combo of Korg’s tiny beasts, better known as Korg Volca, Korg drops yet another in the line of new classics. The Volca Sample is a nod to the samplers of old and even kind of, sort of has a takes on a bit of vintage mpc-ness from a color / design perspective. Still it’s very distinctively “Volca”… see tiny knobs.

It comes with 100 samples loaded and ready to be manipulated with the likes of onboard “Analog Isolator”  which puts me in the mind of a couple of classic analog filters like Electrix Filter Queen or EQ Killer that would allow you to pin point and isolate a particular frequency range and nail to the sonic wall thus adding depth and texture to the creative palette. Yes! It does that out the box.

Other cool functions include the iOS app which allows you to “Record, manage, and download samples from volca sample’s dedicated iOS app.” No word as of yet, that i’ve heard/noticed, on if you’ll be able to sample into it, store new samples etc. but given the sub culture surrounding these little Volca boxes I’m betting there will be some sort of mod to do so. But then there is this one bit “manage, and download samples” with the ios app. Well, we shall see soon enough I imagine.

Sample frequency is 31.25 kHZ, 16 bit. That’s sort of dirty considering the original MPC 3000 had a sample rate of 16-bit 44.1 kHz while the MPC 60 had a sample rate of 12-bit 40 kHz. At any rate (see how I worked that?), even if there is no correlation it would be cool to have had some sort of 12bit functionality on it. Mod perhaps?
