Lenny White, another jazz fusion pioneer is true jazz legend. His work on landmark projects such as Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew and Chick Corea’s Return to Forever has solidified his position as one of the greatest drummer ever.

Here in this edition of DOWN THE RHODES, Lenny White discusses his experiences in early jazz fusion bands playing along side the Rhodes and Electric bass. The idea that Lenny came along in a time when amplified / electric bass and pianos were gaining ground is fascinating in itself. But to go further into the thought that his drums were not mic’d accordingly (at least not during that time) and that he had to play hard and loud enough that his hands bled, is a major testament to his mastery of the instrument, love for the music and the dedication to his craft. It makes for a pretty cool story to tell too.
