If you make music with your iOS device using any number of popular music apps such as KORG iMS-20,  Korg Electribe, Magellan etc. you may have noticed this WIST option. Cool. Okay. But what is it and why do I need it?

Well, think of WIST as the virtual iOS equivalent of SMPTE tone. Okay so I realize that in a world of virtual analog, software synths and computer music many of you may have no idea what SMPTE tone is. So ultimately I’ve just tried to simplify an unknown with a more complicated unknown. That was fun.

Let’s start over…

WIST is Korg’s free standard for iOS music app developers. WIST allows multiple music apps on different devices to sync and start and play together. Whats really dope about it is that you and a friend can jam out together in the most techy, geek down fashion with separate iOS devices, no wires, no worries. Start WIST to link up and jam.

WIST allows for wireless sync-start between two WIST-compatible apps on two iOS devices located near each other. 3G or Wi-Fi connections are not required as WIST uses Bluetooth. There are two modes, Master and Slave. The first device will be treated as the Master for sync-start, sync-stop and tempo. The second device will Slave to the Master settings. The setup process is very simple and easy.

The WIST SDK is now available to all iOS music developers for free! The benefits of WIST technology are now available for iOS music apps! This means that we may begin to see this capability in all sorts of music apps in the near future.
