My guy Greg Savage, the man behind Boom Bap Phonetics returns to the drum samples game with the much anticipated Boom Bap Phonetics 2.

Back in June we caught up with Greg Savage and asked if there was indeed a BBP2 in the works. His response… “YES! It’s been put on the back burner for a while. Every time I get into it I wind up getting contracted for another sound job – Priority 1st I guess. But, I’m looking to complete it as well as others real soon.”

Well it seems that soon is now. Boom Bap Phonetics 2 includes Drum Loops and fills both clean and filtered versions.  The kit includes “over 160 Samples: Kicks, Snares, Breaks, Fills, Hi Hats, Bass, Loops” all at 16 bit sample rate. The recording chain looked something like this… “Recording Chain: Live Drums → Microphones (Multiple Condensers/Dynamics) → Joe Meek Preamp → Mpc 3000/Sp303.”

So, as I listen to the demo and as I’ve played with the kit for a short while (a day or two), I’ve found that BBP2 in its effort to create original drum samples has a very live drummer feel and sound to them. The drum rolls are reminiscent of Stetsasonic’s classic drum rolls just before Daddy-O, Wise & Frukwan yells “Break”. Classic indeed, dope and very usable.

BBP2 surely gives the beat maker more to pull from with stems, fills and loops both filtered and unfiltered. Still, I cant help but to think that the name of the kit, at least where it concerns the fills and stems, should be Boom Bap Phonetics 2: The Breaks. This is definitely a kit that can coexist with the original Boom Bap Phonetics as it seems to compliment rather than compete. But rest assured, the bap is certainly back with the included one shots as its obvious that the time spent in processing via the MPC 3000 etc imparted a bit of that magic on the source material. Snares crack and kicks bump just as one would expect from Boom Bap Phonetics 2.
